January 23, 2026
As we head into the weekend, we are expecting extremely cold temperatures. We encourage families to take extra precautions to help everyone stay safe and warm—limiting time outdoors, dressing in layers, and checking in on one another, especially children and vulnerable family members.
At school, we talk often with students about noticing how we feel and what we need—physically and emotionally—to stay well. Staying warm is one of those basic needs, and learning to care for ourselves and others during challenging conditions is an important life skill. When students learn that it’s okay to ask for help, to speak up when they are uncomfortable, and to look out for friends, they are building empathy, responsibility, and resilience.
The Harwood School Board met on Wednesday, January 21 to review and approve the final version of the proposed 2026-2027 budget that will appear on the March 3 ballot. The Board unanimously approved the budget for recommendation to the voters. The proposal represents a 5.4% year over year increase, with a 3.7% increase in education spending. This budget represents and supports our commitment to continuing to educate all students in a safe and supportive environment.
The Board’s Communications Committee will be sharing additional information in the coming days. We will need everyone’s help in ensuring that accurate information is shared in our communities. For your reference, here is the link to the budget presentation from the last school board meeting. If you have any questions about the upcoming budget vote, Chris and Sarah welcome you to reach out via phone or email.
Thank you for partnering with us in keeping our community safe, cared for, and connected—this weekend and every day.
Warmly,
Sarah & Chris

BPS Backpack Program
Brookside Primary School is sponsoring, free of charge, a “weekend of food” for your child program, aka the Denise Goodnow Backpack Program. We are able to offer a supply of nutritious meals and snacks for children over their weekends and extended breaks, at no cost. Any child enrolled (or with a sibling enrolled) in Waterbury, Duxbury or Moretown is able to receive these weekly bags of food.
If you believe your child could benefit from this program, we encourage you to sign them up by filling the form out below and returning it to the main office or sending it back via email. Only one form is needed for all the children in your family, but include information for each child in the form below. This information is kept confidential. Once your child is signed up, they will receive a backpack full of food each week. We encourage you to take advantage of this program for your family and your children.
Please note: empty backpacks should be returned to school on Friday or Monday so that they can be refilled and ready to go on each Thursday. This is key to sustaining the program.

In this mixed ages workshop for adults, teens, or children over seven accompanied by an adult, learn how to make photographs with everyday objects, the light of the sun, and water! With cyanotype photography, you’ll make photographs by placing objects you choose on specially coated light-sensitive paper, exposing to the light of the sun, and developing the image in water. The resulting image is a deep blue where sunlight fell and white where the object was.
This in person learning opportunity emphasizes community-building and artistic skill-building in a relaxed and fun setting. Evie Lovett, the Teaching Artist, will provide participants with clear instruction, demonstrations and supplies. No experience necessary. All invited.

Over and Under the Snow
Written by Kate Messner, Illustrated by Christopher Silas Neal
A child and parent cross-country ski through fields and forests, observing the sights and
sounds they encounter above the snow, while also learning about the secret lives of the
animals hidden under the snow, sometimes safe and warm, and sometimes awake and
busy.
“Over the snow I glide, past beech trees rattling leftover leaves and strong, silent pines
that stretch to the sky. On a high branch, a great horned owl keeps watch.”
“Under the snow, a tiny shrew dodges columns of ice; it follows a cool tunnel along the
moss, out of sight.”
Some of the observations show the contrast to the animals’ lives during a different
season of the year:
“Over the snow, I glide past reeds where tadpoles play tag in springtime.”
Under the snow, fat bullfrogs snooze. They dream of sun-warmed days, back when they
had tails.”
Deer, beavers, a fox, mice, chipmunks, a bear and a bumblebee are among some of the
other animals existing over or under the snow. Some are snoozing, some foraging and
some are hunting for the others.
The book ends as the child snuggles under the covers and dreams,“of cuddling deer mice and slumbering frogs. Hungry beavers and tunneling voles. Drowsy bears and busy squirrels.
And the secret kingdom under the snow.”
At the end of the book there is additional information about each featured animal and a list for further reading, along with an explanation of the subnivean zone, “the secret kingdom” between the bottom of the snowpack and the surface of the ground. Kate Messner has written over 50 books, including 8 books in the Over and Under series, which were all illustrated by Christopher Silas Neal.
We hope that you encounter some interesting sights and sounds as you walk through
the snow this winter, and of course, we would love to hear about your adventures. The StoryWalk® Project was created by Anne Ferguson and developed in collaboration with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library in Montpelier Vermont. Storywalk® is a registered service mark owned by the Kellogg-Hubbard Library.
